The survey department at Abnia Consulting Engineers has put the Trimble R12i GNSS receiver into field operation. The feature that stood out most for our team is TIP tilt compensation.
The receiver combines an integrated IMU with the Trimble ProPoint GNSS engine to measure the tilt angle and direction of the pole in real time. It then computes the position of the pole tip rather than the antenna phase center, so surveyors no longer need to plumb the rover and center the bubble before every shot.
What sets it apart
- Calibration-free out of the box
- Immune to magnetic interference from vehicles and electrical boxes
- Continuous IMU integrity monitoring that corrects biases caused by temperature or impacts
According to Trimble’s specification, tilted measurement accuracy is RTK + 5 mm + 0.4 mm per degree of tilt.
Our own field check
Our team measured the same point with the rover plumb and then tilted, and compared the coordinates. The differences were within the allowable tolerance.
The biggest gain is in utility and detail surveys. Manholes, light poles, building corners and points against walls, which used to take extra time to plumb, are now measured directly, and field productivity has clearly increased.
